iPhone Apps Released

Lifehacker has a great post up about some of the new apps for the iPhone 2.0 update enabled phones. So if you have an updated iPhone you really should go check this out.

More than 550 new applications arrived for the iPhone and iPod touch this morning in iTunes’ brand new App Store and more than 130 of them are available for free. This morning we’re taking a look at the best free applications for your iPhone and iPod Touch, available after the 2.0 software update officially arrives (or after you’ve grabbed the unofficial update).

Note: Most of the apps listed here work with both iPhones and iPod touch models, but we’ve noted where an app requires the iPhone’s voice, SMS, or GPS capabilities to run.

Too Human, Not Enough?

For those of you who don’t know, Too Human is a Diabloish style game with a third person view set in a futuristic world of Norse mythology. Sounds pretty awesome to me. The initial gameplay videos made me really excited about the game. I was hoping that Too Human would be everything Hellgate: London was supposed to be. Exciting combat in a Sci-Fi setting with some awesome coop (and having it work). Well, last weekend the studio set out some preview copies to let reviews have some time with the game, and the results are not good.

From Kotaku’s Round up:

Poor Denis DyackToo Human‘s not even out yet, and already, the knives are out. None sharper than this one: over on the Eurogamer boards, one of the site’s mods – a chap who claims to be a journo – says his Too Human review NDA is “against [his] human rights”. He also says “this has to be the worst game I’ve played in the last 5 years”, citing everything from the game’s animation to its supposedly repetitive combat. This follows on from a few hands-on impressions hitting yesterday that range from the wary to the downbeat to the cautiously damning. None of which are the final word. But all of which will nevertheless be taken as final gospel/reviews by the impressionable and trollish (despite the potential that one is a complete fabrication), which should make a fascinating case study in the construction of internet preconceptions for some student, somewhere.

Things That Might Suck: Red Sonja

It seems that there is a new Red Sonja movie in the works, and this is the first I have hear of it. I loved the original back in the day. It was fun and exciting, and had Conan in it (Even if he wasn’t really Conan). The new Red Sonja is going to be played by Rose McGowan, and I am not sure how I feel about that. Actually, I do know how I feel about that. Not good. I will let i09.com tell you more.

Now that Rose McGowan is starring in the sword-and-sorcery-and-cleavage movie Red Sonja, produced by beau Robert Rodriguez, does this mean that the pair’s Barbarella movie is really on hold? Last we heard, the movie already had some sets built, but director Rodriguez hadn’t managed to scare up the $82 million he needs to create the space fantasy starring McGowan in the role Jane Fonda made famous. But an article announcing their Red Sonja movie doesn’t mention Barbarella at all. What’s going on?

According to the USA Today article about theRed Sonja movie, McGowan came to Rodriguez with a script about the scrappy warrior who vows never to sleep with a man until he’s bested her in combat. He became excited by the script, but she was originally startled to be offered it. “When they first came to me with it, I thought it was funny,” she said. “I do have a body made for sitting on a veranda with mint juleps and a parasol. I don’t know why I always have to save the planet.”

Rodriguez says McGowan is perfect for Sonja, because she’s scrappy. “Rose is a pistol,” he explained. “She’s whip-smart, has attitude to burn, is sexy, extremely strong, yet has a vulnerable side that would surprise her closest friends. That description also fits Red Sonja.”

So what’s up with Barbarella? After all, it already has those half-built spaceship sets, but filming on Red Sonja (directed by Rodriguez associate Douglas Aarniokoski) starts in October. It turns out that McGowan and Rodriguez were already shopping around another script for her to star in as of last month — a women in prison TV drama called Women In Chains, according to our sister site Defamer. (I wonder if the script has the Pinocchio sex joke that every women-in-prison movie includes.) And Rodriguez is busy directing a family comedy called Shorts. So it sounds as though they’d already kind of given up on Barbarella, deep in their hearts.

3G iPhone Info Roundup and First Impressions

Once again pulling from Gizmodo, we have their first impressions, and they are pretty damn positive, here is what they had to say:

In my hand, the 3G iPhone is lighter, fits better, and noticeably thinner feeling as it doesn’t have the same squarish shape. (You won’t notice that it is thicker at all.) I made a call with it, side by side with my 1st generation iPhone, and the reception is noticeably better as well. I can’t even believe this is frigging AT&T anymore. I’d called Lisa and asked her if she noticed if it was clearer or not. She replied, “It’s a lot better, but it’s also better that you’re actually calling me.” A tough crowd.

The reception increase is partly to do with the new plastic back. There are 10 radio bands in here, counting 3 GSM bands, 4 3G bands, and Bluetooth and WiFi. (And one more I don’t know?) I don’t know how scratch resistant I believe it will be, but Apple says it will be more durable. It looks EXACTLY like the leaked images from awhile ago that were chalked up as iPhone 1 cases.

New iPhone Official (Duh)

So, as pretty much any one who follows Tech knows, today Steve Jobs was supposed to announce the new 3g iPhone. He did. The guys over at Gizmodo have a LIST of features up, and they are constantly updating it.

Here is what we have so far:

Key Features:
Charcoal Back
Solid Metal Buttons
Same 3.5″ Display
Camera
Flush Headphone Jack
Dramatically Improved Audio

3G Advantage

Showing a EDGE vs 3G comparison loading a webpage, 3G took 21 seconds. EDGE…waiting…waiting…uhh…59 seconds! Same phone, same location. 2.8X faster – and they claim loads webpages faster than Nokia N95 (33 seconds) or Treo 750 (34 seconds).

Battery Life
8-10 hours of talk time
5 hours 3G talk time
5-6 hours of browing
24 hours of audio battery

And GPS!

And it’s coming to 70 countries over the “next several months.”

More Affordable
$199 for 8GB

$299 for 16GB (which also comes in white)

Coming July 11th

I have been waiting for the new phone for a while now, and I will be getting one, the only thing is that the backplate is all plastic now, which is a real bummer. But I guess for -$200 its probably worth it.

I will have Nickel, our resident Apple fanboy post updates as they come available.

Edit (By Nickel): The new iPhones will cost $199 (8GB) and $299 (16GB) with an unlimited 3G data plan costing $30/month. This is an increase from the current $20/month unlimited EDGE data plan for the 1st generation iPhone. Voice plans continue to start at $39.99, but no additional details are provided.

This is an increase of $10/month from the EDGE plan. Now we know where the drop in price for the phone went. Bastards. I bet you still have to pay $20 more than that for unlimited texting.

I Can Has Graphs

I was introduced to a new site today, Graphjam which has users submit graphs in the same style as icanhascheezburger (And is run by them also). Most of them are themed after music lyrics, but not all. I think I like the Emo one the best. Go check it out.
